An antistatic or electrically conductive hose is required when static charge can cause sparks and therefore a fire or explosion hazard, such as in ATEX zones. When a product flows through a hose, friction occurs, generating static electricity. A conductive hose dissipates this charge so that it cannot build up anywhere.
When assembling a hose, SCHIEMA uses a resistance meter (ohmmeter) to measure the electrical resistance from coupling to coupling. For use in ATEX zones, this resistance must not exceed 10⁶ ohms (1 million ohms). Standards also apply to the resistance through the wall, from inside to outside. SCHIEMA can also test and certify hose assemblies.
For tailored advice, the following information is needed: which product is being pumped, in which ATEX zone the hose will be used, which electrical resistance is required and whether the hose must comply with a specific EN standard.
